HBDJ Weekly Update – Week 40

HBDJ Homebrewed DJs Weekly Update Week 40 Promotional Image

Morning, and welcome to Week 40 of the HBDJ Homebrewed DJs Weekly Update!

We've got a few things to cover this week: Open Decks, a huge night in the big smoke, and a lovely evening at Miss Gee's.

Open Decks

We'll be releasing the lineup for our upcoming Open Decks event this week!

We've almost locked in all our DJs, so we're shaping up for another great night on Saturday, 18th July. As always, every set will be recorded and uploaded to the Homebrewed DJs YouTube channel for everyone to enjoy after the event.

These nights are always a blast. If you're a DJ, promoter, or simply someone who loves good music, come down, meet some like-minded people, and have a boogie. You never know who you might meet or what new sounds you might discover.

Matariki Friday – 30th in Auckland

About a month ago, we were booked to play a rave-themed 30th birthday in Auckland.

The venue was a seriously cool property out in Flat Bush, and the brief was simple: filthy Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Trap, and anything else heavy enough to shake the walls.

On Friday morning, Michael, Tyler, and I packed my little car to the absolute brim with gear and hit the road for Auckland. Apologies again, Tyler.

Once we arrived, we headed straight to the venue to get everything set up. The party was being held in a stable underneath the house, which meant I could drive the car almost directly to where we needed to unload. I'm not sure I'll ever get an easier parking spot than that.

After setup, we checked into the hotel, had a bit of a muck around, grabbed some dinner, and then boosted back to Flat Bush for the party.

When we arrived, the JBL speaker was already pumping out dancefloor Drum & Bass, so it only felt right to pick up where it left off. The night quickly escalated into exactly what we'd hoped for—a heavy mix of Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Trap, and everything in between.

Throughout the night, we switched up genres, kept the energy high, and entertained a crowd that was more than happy to get involved. One of the best parts of the night was hearing people come up to us throughout the event to tell us how much fun they were having. That's always a great feeling and a reminder of why we love doing this.

Once everything was packed down and we got back to the hotel, the chaos continued. We headed into town for a couple of hours, and at around 4am, I came up with the brilliant idea of driving home. Surprisingly, there were no objections from the crew, so that's exactly what we did.

Michael was in charge of the vlog for this one, so keep an eye out for that over the next few days.

In the meantime, he's also launched a new series on the Michaelangelo Media page called "Who the F Do You Think You Are?" — a short-form interview series featuring creatives from Tauranga and beyond.

You can catch the first episode below:

Miss Gee's – Saturday

After finally recovering from the night before, I loaded Silva Bumpa's birthday tunes onto my USB and headed down to Miss Gee's for an 8pm–11pm set.

To be honest, I expected things to be fairly quiet, but we ended up seeing a steady flow of people through the venue all night. Apart from one particularly rude patron, it was an awesome evening.

There's something special about playing feel-good music in the CBD and watching people stumble across it unexpectedly. Nights like that remind me how much I enjoy the smaller sessions just as much as the bigger gigs.

Hopefully, we'll be back behind the decks at Miss Gee's again soon.

To Wrap Up

It's been a huge weekend and we've got another big one just around the corner.

Make sure you get down to Open Decks nice and early to catch some incredible local talent behind the decks. You might even discover your new favourite DJ.

Lastly, if you haven't already, go and check out Detritus Designs.

They've recently dropped their Winter Collection and are the home of all Homebrewed DJs and Homebass NZ merch.

See you all next week.
