What Makes a DJ Unique? Finding the Right DJ for Your Event

Great music can make or break an event.
The right DJ isn't just someone who presses play on a playlist. They're reading the room, understanding the crowd and knowing when to build the energy, when to pull it back and when to drop the tune everyone's been waiting for.
That's what we believe makes a great DJ — and it's a big part of what we bring to every event at Homebrewed DJs.
What Makes a DJ Unique?
Every DJ has their own approach to music. Some stick closely to one genre, while others enjoy jumping between styles and finding unexpected ways to connect different sounds.
For us, being a good DJ isn't about having the biggest music library. It's about knowing what to play, when to play it and how to make it work for the people in front of you.
A few things that make a DJ stand out include:
Genre Mixing: Moving between different styles without killing the energy.
Creative Mixing: Using loops, effects, blends and transitions to make tracks work together.
Reading the Room: Paying attention to what people are actually responding to rather than blindly following a playlist.
Adaptability: Being able to change direction when the crowd takes the night somewhere unexpected.
Personality: Bringing your own taste and character to the music rather than simply playing what's popular.
A DJ with a genuine style doesn't just provide background music. They become part of the experience.
Meet the Homebrewed DJs
One of the things we love about Homebrewed is that there isn't one single “Homebrewed sound”.
Our team brings different tastes, genres and approaches to the decks, which means we're able to build sets around the event and the people in front of us.
Jaden
Jaden's sets are all about energy, genre jumping and finding those unexpected tunes that somehow just work. From house and UK garage through to drum & bass, bass music and plenty of throwbacks, he's never particularly interested in staying in one lane for too long.
Levi
Levi brings a strong focus on energy and flow, with a love for heavier sounds and bass-driven music. He's particularly at home when the dance floor is ready to get moving, but knows how to build a set rather than going straight for the biggest tune.
Michael
Michael brings another perspective to the Homebrewed team, with a broad musical taste and a strong focus on reading the room. His ability to adapt to different crowds and event styles makes him a valuable part of the team.
Together, we can offer something a little different depending on what your event needs.
Wedding DJ Costs in New Zealand
If you're planning a wedding, one of the first questions you'll probably have is “how much does a DJ cost?”
The answer depends heavily on what you're looking for.
Things that can affect the price include:
How many hours you need the DJ
The size of the venue
Sound system requirements
Lighting and special effects
Ceremony or cocktail-hour music
Additional DJs
Setup and pack-down requirements
Travel
Rather than choosing a DJ based purely on the cheapest quote, it's worth considering what is actually included in the package and whether the DJ is going to be the right fit for your wedding.
For a wedding, you're not just hiring someone to play music for a few hours. You're trusting them to help control the atmosphere of one of the biggest celebrations you'll have.
Why Homebrewed DJs?
We're based in Tauranga and regularly DJ weddings, birthdays, corporate events, private parties and community events throughout the Bay of Plenty.
What we try to bring to every event is pretty simple:
Music that suits your crowd
Experienced DJs who can adapt
Professional sound and lighting
A relaxed and approachable team
A focus on keeping the dance floor moving
A music selection built around your event rather than a generic playlist
Whether you're after chilled background music, a packed wedding dance floor or something a little more energetic, we'll work with you to figure out what suits the event.
Booking a DJ for Your Event
Before booking, we'd recommend:
Listen to their mixes – Get a feel for how they actually DJ rather than just looking at their song list.
Check reviews – See what previous clients have said about the experience.
Talk about the vibe – Make sure you and the DJ are on the same page about the type of night you want.
Ask what's included – Find out about sound, lighting, setup and pack-down.
Make sure you get along – You'll be spending a fair chunk of your event with your DJ, so having someone you actually like matters.
At the end of the day, the right DJ should make your event easier, not harder.
They should understand the brief, adapt when things change and most importantly, know how to keep the music feeling right throughout the night.
